Ixodes scapularis can be identified by its overall teardrop shape with a small plain brown scutum and large underlying cream colored abdomen (Fig. 3). It lacks festoons, and has dark legs and short anterior mouthparts. It is most common in the northeastern United States and the Great Lake states, but may be found anywhere in the eastern United States. These ticks are often found on the trunk. They are an important vector for Lyme disease , human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), and babesiosis [13]. Ixodes pacificus (Fig. 4) resides along the Pacific coastal USA and transmits HGA and Lyme disease . Ixodes cookei is found in the eastern USA and Canada and transmits a flavivirus causing Powassan disease [10].
